Study on the physical and mechanical properties of bauxite residue by laboratory and field in-situ tests

The determination of physical and mechanical properties bauxite residue plays an important role on the stability assessment tailing disposal dams. This paper studies composition, properties, shear strength, bearing capacity by laboratory field in-situ tests. near discharge point are mainly coarse particles, size particle far away from reservoir shows a decreasing trend. Through X-ray diffraction, composition is analyzed: material composed seven main crystalline materials containing aluminum, iron, titanium, silicon. variation water content with depth measured tests; distribution obvious stratification characteristic sudden change occurs between layers. vane tests show that strength at more than 5 m much larger in shallow layer close to surface. dynamic penetration tests, stratum can be categorized according distance point. soil edge area higher center tailings pond. anisotropic behavior property varies along horizontal vertical directions.
